The Man Who Walked With God and Disappeared
“Enoch walked faithfully with God” (Genesis 5:24) Wait! “What does that really mean? What does “walked “ really mean?” Perhaps looking up the Hebrew root word translated in English as “walk” could be useful here. Who knows what deep meaning could be unearthed, right?
Well, how about I ask you “What else can it mean?” If you read in the news tomorrow “President Akufo-Addo was seen walking with President John Mahama”, what will you imagine except to see the two of them literally walking together? Enoch “walked” with God. This phrase is a common one used in Eastern countries to denote “constant and familiar intercourse.”¹ That means he was seen on literal walks having constant communication with God. And he did that faithfully. The New Living Translation of Genesis 5:23-24 reads, “Enoch lived..., walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.” Enoch went on walks conversing with God! And this was a constant practice throughout his life! This is the simple literal meaning you should pick from Genesis 5.24. This is what the writer wanted to tell you.
But of course, how can two walk together unless they are in agreement with each other? (Amos 3.3). So we can say, Enoch and God had a mutual friendship, mutual understanding between them and were fond of each other — hence the walks. In simple terms, Enoch lived in close fellowship/friendship with God, taking walks that he and God agreed to do together. This was the most striking thing the Bible could record about Enoch’s 365 years life on earth. Shouldn’t that strike you as something you should learn to do?
Friends like to walk together. Lovers love to walk together. Family love to walk together. Soldiers feel safer walking together. Work colleagues take lunch breaks together. What relationship exist between you and God today? Is He your friend? Is He your Father? If He is, then why don’t you begin to walk with Him today. Believe me, God will love it; and so will you!
How does one begin to walk with God? Walking with God is no rocket science. You just have to move around from Point A to B while talking with God—simple! You can start by meditating on the Scriptures, the nature and attributes of God, Worship, Thanksgiving, singing to Him or simply considering His works.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalms 19:1, NIV)
Try it today! Get up and go for a walk with God today! Deepen your relationship with God by taking walks. Enjoy!
