Christians Will Mislead Your Christianity

If you’ve ever been a victim of any of this, I cannot apologise enough for the misrepresentation of the name of Jesus and the trauma you may be subject to.

Christianity is primarily a covenant relationship with God that spills out to relationship with others. The role of Jesus here is as follows:

  • He is the only official moral example — the authorised manual — on how to relate with God and people. Every other Bible character is simply a supporting act who either opposed or promoted the protagonist — Jesus Christ. “Learn from me”, He said in Matthew 11:29. Christians must deliberately learn and pick their morals from Jesus Christ only. Christianity is practically unlivable without this intentional commitment to following Jesus as the only manual to the Christian life.
  • He is the ultimate standard for judging Christianity. Is Christianity true or false? Is Christianity livable or not? Is Christianity the worst or best thing to happen to society? Such questions are answered looking at the life and claims of Jesus rather than that of Christians. Christians are merely a collection of apprentices who by the grace of God are supposed to mimic the standard steadily until they are fully true reflections of Jesus in their society. You may have discovered, sadly, that Christians have not been consistent with this apprenticeship. From pedophiles, to adulterers, to Abusers, to liars, to hypocrites, to rapists, to gossips, to whatever — name it, and you can find a professing Christian guilty of it! It’s really sad and disheartening, to say the least. If you’ve ever been a victim of any of this, I cannot apologise enough for the misrepresentation of the name of Jesus and the trauma you may be subject to. “As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of [us, who claim to be His followers].” (Romans 2.24). I pray for God’s grace and healing for you.

Just as one shouldn’t judge the story/play of Romeo and Juliet based on a bad cast, it is wrong to judge the “Art of Christianity” by the failures of Christians. In fact, our disgust and disappointment in such people is proof that Christianity is better than that! We understand that such people have failed the Jesus they profess to follow. Just as with Romeo and Juliet, a skilful writer — Jesus Christ — has already set the script for Christianity and it’s a masterpiece!

As hard as it may be, considering the constant presence of such people around us, it is of the highest priority that we constantly remind ourselves who the standard is. He is the only moral example anyone can find; the only sense we can find in Christianity; the only boast, we can make in Christianity — Jesus Christ.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith — Hebrews 12.2 (NLT)
